STEFAN GLAS

My work is figurative. The figures are the main actors of my paintings. The space around them also plays a central role and can be something real like a cliff or just abstract shapes. I´m not too much concerned about the content itself. The act of painting and the composition are more important. Another key component of my work is the application of paint itself. The paintings in the show have multiple layers of oil paint. The paintings don´t follow certain plans - they are improvised. The figures are developed from drawings. However, the end result is always different than the starting point.

The relation of color fields is also very important to me. In some areas they harmonize together and at other points they start to break apart. I like to use strong color contrasts and play with light and dark. In general color is very important to me.

I’m not interested in a naturalistic depiction of the figure. I want to convert them into something that bears my own handwriting.

Having a strong facial expression, they often look at the spectators and interact with them. The narrative itself remains a riddle, thereby equipping the paintings with a strange sensation.
